Dogs bark for many reasons, as a warning, to show excitement, even out of loneliness. For some pooches, the barking can be excessive and cause problems for owners and their neighbors. The ASPCA recommends that dog owners first try to discover the reason behind the barking and make any possible changes to the dog's environment. If the problem continues, the use of bark control collars can be an effective tool in curbing this aggravation.

Bark control collars work by using a variety of negative reinforcement to train the dog not to bark. The original collars used electrical current. Now collars also use vibration, ultrasonic sound, and a spray. These collars are battery operated and respond to the vibration caused by the barking. The vibration triggers either the mild shock, ultrasonic sound or spray. The idea is that the dog will learn to associate the negative reaction to the barking. The concern that the animal is being harmed keeps some people from using this technique. However, many of the collars have settings to adjust the level of output, allowing the owner to tailor the outcome during training. The spray collars emit a scent, such as lemon or citronella, when the dog barks. This type of collar helps many owners to feel better about this type of training, as it ensures there is no painful discomfort to the dog. They also leave a lingering smell, allowing the owners to know if the dog had been barking.

Some bark control collars have additional uses. Many have remote controls, allowing for the owner to activate the collar when the dog is barking, to train the dog to remain in the yard, keep them away from other animals, etc. GPS locaters are also included in some collars. This helps locate animals that have gotten lost. These mutli-purpose collars can give the owner more control and peace of mind all in one package!

The variety of collars are easily found both online and in stores. They come in sizes for small to large dogs. There are also types that allow for owner controlled receivers, allowing for more active training. The cost can easily fit into any budgets. From the simple to the high tech, there is a collar for every dog!
